Income Tax Bands
UK income tax is progressive: 0% on first £12,570, 20% on £12,571-£50,270, 40% on £50,271-£125,140, and 45% above £125,140. Your tax code determines your personal allowance.
National Insurance
NI contributions fund NHS and state pension. You pay 12% on earnings between £12,570-£50,270, then 2% above. Self-employed rates differ. No NI on pension contributions.
Student Loans
Plan 1: 9% on income above £22,015. Plan 2: 9% above £27,295. Payments stop when loan is repaid or after 30 years. Check which plan applies to you.
Pension Contributions
Workplace pensions are mandatory. Minimum 8% total (3% employer, 5% employee). Contributions reduce taxable income. Consider salary sacrifice schemes for tax efficiency.
Tax Codes Explained
1257L is standard (£12,570 allowance). K codes mean you owe tax. BR means basic rate on all income. Check your code is correct to avoid over/underpaying tax.
Salary Negotiation
Research market rates, highlight achievements, consider total package including benefits. Timing matters - annual reviews or after major accomplishments work best.
